Chapter Six
Iason heard Cassandra coming toward him. Heâd caught his name on the wind but didnât turn to answer her. He wasnât sure what he would say. It was very clear she thought he was crazy.
Throwing the ball at his pet fish, Iason watched the ugly creature dive after it. The wind blew up his toga, and he heard her gasp. A smile curled his lips. Before he told her of their curse, sheâd been staring at him like she wanted to jump over the table and devour him. The feeling was mutual, and heâd been up most of the night with a serious affliction just thinking about it. Knowing that they needed to talk first had kept him from hopping over the table and eating his meal off her naked chest.
If she was attracted to him, it was a start. Iason had no problem succumbing to her desires for they were his desires as well. Bending over, he let the wind lift his toga more fully as he tossed the ball. As he listened to her footsteps, he detected her tripping feet, and his grin widened.
Cassandra obviously didnât know about the Merrsâ sensitive hearing. He might not tell her just yet. It was adorable the way she would get tripped up and nervous around him. Her breathing often caught and changed with little provocation.
Iason clapped, caught the ball, and threw it back at the water. As his pet fish dove after it, she called, âIason?â
Iason turned, glancing at her. He smiled. Her red hair blew exotically wild around her face, trailing along the wind. She was so pale, so delicate, that he wanted to wrap her in his arms and protect her always. Her arms were pulled inside her gown. Then, seeing how sheâd wrapped the gown around her body, he chuckled. It was all wrong.
Cassandra stopped at his laugh, glancing down her body. âWhat?â
âThe gown,â he said. Iason let his eyes drift over her as he dipped his voice into a low, sultry tone. âWould you like me to show you how to drape it?â
Cassandra opened her mouth to speak but was stopped when his pet fish hit the ball back at him. It struck him in the side of the head with a loud thud. He blinked in surprise, turning to glare at the ugly little animal. The creature swam back and forth, mocking him.
Cassandra laughed. It was a beautiful sound. Iason rubbed the side of his head, giving her a playfully grumpy look. She joined him on the platform.
To his pleasure, she pulled her arms from the gown and reached up to touch his temple lightly where the ball had hit. Then, leaning over, she picked the ball up and eyed the pond. âWhat are you doing?â
Iason clapped. The ugly little fish surfaced, wagging his tail fins.
âPlease donât tell me thatâs Poseidon,â she said dryly, arching a brow.
Iason laughed. âNo.â
âYour wife?â she asked, eyeing him strangely.
Iason jerked, repulsed by the very idea. âGods no! We do not mate with fish.
